ΑKSIOS THESSALONIKI - public space Landscape design
The study concerns the design of a bioclimatic, social housing complex, in the municipality of Axios, Thessaloniki, Greece. The main aim of the study was the application of bioclimatic principles and strategies to the complex, for the heating, cooling, natural lighting and ventilation of the residences. The buildings are placed on a south-north axis, in order to exploit to the maximum the southern front and to minimize the buildings’ surface. Two types of residences were designed. In both types the buildings exploit solar gains with greenhouses designed as an extension of the living rooms. The plantation has a structural role in the synthesis: deciduous trees and pergolas with climbing plants are placed to the south, while evergreen trees are planted to the north. Lighting shelves and roof windows diffuse light providing visual comfort. In this way, north-facing bedrooms receive southern light. Wind-catchers at the stairwell roofs, and variable sized windows that increase the airflow, are used for the buildings’ ventilation. status: open competition
